Common Eye Conditions We Manage

Our Independent Prescribing Optometrists can assess, diagnose, and treat a wide variety of eye conditions, including those listed in the College of Optometrists Clinical Management Guidelines (CMGs):

Red or Painful Eyes

  • Conjunctivitis (bacterial, viral, allergic)
  • Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)
  • Styes and chalazion (blocked eyelid glands)
  • Corneal abrasions (scratches/surface injuries)
  • Uveitis (inflammation inside the eye)
  • Subconjunctival haemorrhage (burst blood vessel on the eye surface)

Dry, Gritty or Watery Eyes

  • Dry Eye Syndrome (Evaporative or Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye)
  • Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
  • Blocked tear ducts (Epiphora)
  • Exposure keratopathy (linked to incomplete blinking)

Sudden Vision Changes or Light Sensitivity

  • Corneal infections (keratitis)
  • Iritis (a form of uveitis)
  • Contact lens-related infections
  • Flashes & floaters (assessing risk of retinal detachment)

What Can an Independent Prescribing Optometrist Do?

Our Independent Prescribers can diagnose and manage all conditions covered by the CMGs and prescribe any necessary medications, provided they are not controlled drugs or administered intravenously. This means we can offer faster treatment without the need for a referral in most cases.
